Universities face huge cuts in funding

Lecturers at universities and further education colleges across England have staged a walk-out this week due to recent spending cuts, disrupting thousands of students in the run up to important exams and leaving institutions at a serious loss at a time of record applications

Lecturers at 14 institutions and union members from 11 London colleges took part in the walk-out, opposing cuts that would inevitably lead to job losses.

Universities could face funding cuts of nearly £1 billion, coming at a time of record applications for courses with UCAS figures showing a 16.5 per cent increase in applications from last year.

Pete Green, University and College Union representative at Westminster Kingsway College, argued that despite the walk-out, the mood was extremely positive and determined with the recognition that further action may be required:

“We are sending a message to whoever wins the election that we will not stand for this.”
