classroom

The exams, used by many independent schools throughout the UK, had not been previously approved having struggled to make headway against current A-levels and GCSEs.

By offering part-practical, part-theoretical examinations such as the IGCSE, previous government Labour had hoped such qualifications would become more attractive to brighter pupils.

The IGCSEs resemble the old O-levels, with more essay-based questions and are popular with those who have concerns about regular GCSEs lacking in challenge for brighter pupils.
