The annual Independent Schools Council (ISC) census shows that student numbers in independent schools have fallen by 2,645 pupils

Completed by 1,260 schools, the census also showed that parents are paying on average 4 per cent more to educate their child, making it the lowest fee increase for 16 years.
The average private school fee per term is £4186, with the boarding average totalling at £8003 per term.
161,605 pupils (32 per cent) receive help with their fees, 80 per cent of which is provided by the ISC schools costing them £540 million in the academic year of 2009-2010.
ISC Chief Executive David Lyscom said that the census sends a positive message:
“Despite current economic difficulties, significant numbers of parents are still choosing to invest in the high quality of education for their children found in ISC schools.”
Concerns have however risen among head teachers toward a planned rise in national insurance by Labour. Teachers predict this would have a detrimental effect on schools potentially leading to future fee increases.
