Private Schools dominate top A-level grades

This year, private school teenagers were three times as likely to gain straight A’s at A-level than state educated pupils.

Figures from the Department for Education have shown that 31.8 per cent of 18 year olds in the fee paying sector were awarded three A* or A grades, when only 10.6 per cent achieved these grades in state funded schools.

The figures have indicated a fall as 93.6 per cent of candidates gained two or more A-level passes – down from 95.1 per cent the year before.

The fall came after an overhaul of A-levels by the government on a decision to introduce tougher, essay-style questions to allow students to study fewer modules in more depth.

The Coalition, however, have claimed that the reforms do not go far enough.

Nick Gibb, the Schools Minister, said: “A-levels are an important milestone in life and open up great opportunities for academic study in higher education for future careers.”

“They are a crucial measure of academic achievement and so we will work with universities and employers to ensure that these qualifications continue to meet their needs in the future.”
