Pre-university skills course introduced

The University of East Anglia has worked with two Norfolk high schools to develop a study methods course for A-level students that will bridge the skills gap between school and higher education.

The course has been specially designed to help students work more effectively at A-level as well as in undergraduate studies, by improving their essay writing, note taking and methods of presenting arguments.

Dr Harriet Jones, from the university’s School of Biological Sciences, led the project and claimed that it could be easily incorporated into sixth form timetables:

“My experience of teaching first-year undergraduates made me realise that there was a real need to equip students with a while range of skills, from note-taking to structuring an argument.

“Able students from a wide variety of backgrounds arrive with very good grades, but the A-level syllabus often makes it difficult for teachers to find the time to develop the range of necessary skills.”

The course was launched at a conference of teachers at Derehem Sixth Form College in Norfolk on Tuesday, and is now already being piloted in sixth forms at Wymondham High School and the City of Norwich School.
