‘Overwhelming’ response to academy invite

Education Secretary, Michael Gove, told the House of Commons that over a thousand schools have responded to his invitation to apply for independent status

Gove has emphasised his belief that head teachers and teachers know best how to run schools and is said to be ‘overwhelmed’ by the interest shown so far.

Independent status will give schools more control over their budget, curriculum and will be exempt from Ofsted inspections.

Over 600 schools, who have been rated outstanding by Ofsted, could be fast-tracked and become academies as early as October. Over 200 outstanding primary schools could also become academies.
