The introduction of the new grade has scored a record-breaking year of results, as one in twelve exams has been awarded with the new A*.

The A* grade was introduced this year to challenge the brightest students, and assist universities in choosing the best candidates.
To get an A*, a student must score an A overall in the first year of the course, and then at least 90 per cent in each paper in the second year of the course.
The results showed that girls were more likely to achieve an A* overall, with a total of 8.3 per cent of A-levels taken by girls having achieved an A*, and 7.9 per cent of those from boys.
Chief Executive of UCAS, Mary Curnock Cook, has said thousands of applicants whose places have been confirmed today deserve congratulations for this achievement, “in perhaps the most competitive year for HE admissions in the last 10 years.”
