Education Secretary, Michael Gove, has said that under the government’s education reforms Atheists could create their own schools in England
The “free schools” plan would allow not only Atheists, but parents, teachers and others to set up their own schools.
Atheist Professor Richard Dawkins said that he liked the idea of creating a free-thinking free school but also claimed that he would never want to indoctrinate children in atheism:
“Children should be taught to ask for evidence, to be sceptical, critical, and open-minded.”
Despite Gove claiming he would not choose such a school for his children, he acknowledged that there are some people who explicitly do not want their children educated in a faith-based setting:
“The whole point about our education reforms is that they are, in the broad sense of the word, small “l”, liberal; they exist to provide that greater degree of choice.”
