Dramatic decrease in pupil expulsion

The number of pupils expelled or suspended from schools in England has dramatically decreased; with the rate of expulsions falling by 19.4 per cent in 2008-2009, compared with the previous year.

The government claims that the fall in expulsions has been due to schools and councils being encouraged under Labour not to expel the pupils.

Schools have been encouraged to arrange managed moves for those in danger of permanent exclusion with the common reason for exclusion often being “persistent disruptive behaviour”.

Figures have shown that the rate of exclusion at academies is higher than state funded schools, and that boys are three times more likely to be expelled than girls.

Schools Minister, Nick Gibb, said that despite the fall in exclusions, poor behaviour remains a significant problem in our schools:

“We will introduce further measures to strengthen teacher authority and support schools in maintaining good behaviour.”
