Conservatives propose schools should stay open at weekends

Conservatives say that head teachers should be encouraged to host classes outside of normal school hours for many pupils to catch up

class

Michael Gove insists that such ideas would be up to the individual school to put into place but such a flexible timetable would help working parents:

"Children who come from homes where parents don't have the resources to provide additional stretch and cultural experiences, there are benefits in having those children in the learning environment, in school, for longer."

Such plans have however been criticised by parents concerned that weekend classes would become a “badge of dishonour” if pupils were forced to attend and therefore spotlighted for needing extra help. Siobhan Freegard, co-founder of Netmums, said:

"If it's that a child achieved below this level so they are forced to go to Saturday school it becomes a badge of dishonour or going to the ‘thicko's class’, then it would be more detrimental."
