Gove argued that nothing is more important to the fairness of our society and the future prosperity of our country than getting education right, echoing previous promises by Blair.

"Improving literacy, raising pupil attainment, extending parental choice, freeing teachers from bureaucracy, improving discipline and closing the widening gap between the richest and the poorest should be our shared goal."

He also confirmed intention to move quickly for plans for schools to be given more freedom to become academies, with the focus on ‘liberation’ and proposed legislation in place from September.

Both Conservative and Liberal Democrats are in favour of free schools, although differ on how ‘free’ schools should be.
