International surveys have also suggested that the quality of both primary and secondary teaching in Scotland is slipping, as reading among 10 year olds has not improved since the start of the new millenium.

Only 28 per cent of teachers surveyed in Scottish said they felt very confident in their ability to teach Biology, with 11 per cent for Chemistry and only a staggering 10 per cent for Physics.

Such figures have led to the Scottish government to set up a major review of teacher education that will start in March 2010.

Education Secretary Mike Russel says that smaller class sizes in primary schools will improve teaching:

“I don’t mean or diminish the quality of our teachers, I think it’s normally very good.

“Smaller class sizes in key primary schools makes it work.”
