Tough financial choices lie ahead for parents as the deadline for the new school year approaches

Talk to the school if you’re worried about fees. Many will offer flexible payment schemes or other assistance
The clock is ticking for parents to make decisions on the new school year. With most independent schools requiring a full term’s notice to withdraw pupils without financial penalty, the deadline for the 2009/10 academic year is now.
The current economic climate means that many parents will be facing tough financial decisions on schooling now that the new school term begins.
Recent research from Tom-Brown.com revealed that 90 per cent of leading headteachers had witnessed a rise in the number of parents seeking information on bursaries and scholarships.
“It’s so important to investigate all your options before withdrawing children,” says company director Jo Mearns, whose sons attend an independent school in Bath. “Talk to the school if you are worried about paying fees. Many will offer flexible payment schemes or they might have other financial assistance available.
“Your child may be eligible for a bursary or scholarship if they have a particular talent, educational prowess or meet other criteria. These can be worth as much between 10-50% of school fees,” Jo continues.
Parents could face legal action
Parents need to be aware that if they fail to give adequate notice they could face legal action should the school choose to pursue the matter through the courts. We would urge parents in this situation to ensure that they examine all their financial options and to make sure they consult with the school in the first instance.
Tom-Brown.com also carries a number of links and articles on where parents can turn to for financial assistance in order to ensure they can avoid disrupting their children’s education as much as possible.
