The Catholic Education Service has written to 2,000 Catholic schools, advising them to be cautious about applying for academy status

After the recent warning from the National Grammar Schools Association warning grammar schools against becoming academies, the Catholic Church has also told schools it would be ‘unwise’ for Catholic schools to apply.
Under academy plans, school land and property would transfer to new academy trusts with most of the current Catholic school land being owned by religious orders.
Chief Executive Oona Stannard has warned that although the funds may seem attractive with schools potentially receiving an increase in budget of 10 per cent, schools would be unwise to trade for an‘uncertain future’.
Faith schools already have some of the freedoms being offered by the new academy status.
