American universities have been targeting bright students, after huge numbers of teenagers were rejected from British degree courses
Thousands of students have been considering courses in the US following concerns that the intense competition for undergraduate courses in the UK will be repeated in 2011.
According to figures, 8,700 students took courses on the other side of the Atlantic last year.
Students are also being tempted by generous bursaries and scholarships, which are worth more than £20,000 and are not available in the UK.
Some 127 American universities; including Harvard, Yale, Princeton, John Hopkins University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, will attempt to recruit British students as part of a massive event staged by the US-UK Fulbright Commission.
Several top independent schools have reported a rise in the number of students being attracted to American universities, including: St Pauls in West London, Cheltenham Ladies College and Wellington College.
Andrew Halls, Headmaster of Kings College School Wimbledon, had six students take up places at institutions in the US:
“Some of our students who have gone to American universities have been amazed with the facilities and the interest shown in them by academics, which I don’t think they would have got at a European university.”
